NYC, Washington DC, Nashville and Greensboro – Day Eight

Hey there, fellow adventurers! I’m here to spill the beans on our latest escapades in Washington DC. Brace yourselves for a family blog post filled with cheekiness, humor, and a whole lot of fun. So, sit back, relax, and let me regale you with our delightful day.

First things first, let me start by saying that we had a reasonably good night’s sleep. I know, shocking, right? But hey, we’re a family of daredevils who can conquer the world even with a little shut-eye.

Now, onto the main event. We woke up all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to tackle the day. Our grand plan was to head over to our favorite haunt, 2 Sisters Deli, for a scrumptious brunch. Alas, we arrived only to find the dreaded “Closed” sign staring back at us. Major bummer! ? But fear not, dear readers, for we are resourceful adventurers. We swiftly changed course and made our way to the metro station at L’Enfant Plaza in search of another brunch spot.

We hopped on the Washington DC Red line like pros and hopped off at Farragut North. From there, we embarked on a short stroll to Tatte Bakery. Let me tell you, folks, it was a culinary delight. We snagged a table outside, basking in the glorious sunshine (more on that later), and ordered our breakfast delights. My wife Michele went for the classic fried eggs and bagel combo, while I opted for the trendy poached eggs on sourdough bread. However, our excitement was dampened when we discovered that the service was a bit lackluster, and my poached eggs were as cold as the North Pole. Well, you win some, you lose some!

Reenergized and determined to make the most of our day, we hopped back on the red line at Dupont Circle. Our destination? The Smithsonian National Zoological Park. And guess what? It was free admission! Of course, we happily obliged with a small $10 donation because, let’s face it, those adorable animals deserve a little extra love. Armed with our reservation, we dived headfirst into four and a half hours of pure animal magic. The zoo was incredible, but boy, was it crowded! It seemed like half the city had the same idea as us. And to make things even more interesting, the sun was shining brighter than ever, turning us into walking, talking suntan magnets.

With aching feet and a thirst that could rival a desert, we decided to make a pit stop at Le Pain Quotidien not far from Metro stop at Gallery PI – Chinatown. A glass of refreshing homemade mint and lemonade was just what the doctor ordered. Michele, being the shopping enthusiast that she is, then insisted on indulging in a little retail therapy. Who am I to argue? After all, a happy wife equals a happy life.

As the sun began to set, signaling the end of our Washington DC adventure, we found ourselves at Kirwan’s on the warf. We savored a delicious evening meal accompanied by a well-deserved beer. It was the perfect way to bid farewell to this fantastic city.

Now, dear readers, as our bags are all packed and we prepare for our flight to Nashville, let me leave you with a final thought. Washington DC has truly captivated our hearts with its endless array of things to do and see. It’s a city that feels safe and inviting, but be forewarned: be prepared to walk your socks off! So, grab your comfiest shoes and embark on your own DC adventure. Trust me, it’ll be a trip to remember.

Until next time, fellow adventurers, stay curious, stay daring, and keep exploring!
