Crete 2019 Day Four – Finally, Time to Unwind
A Lazy Morning
Ah, the blissful sensation of finally unwinding! It seems Michele and I have both reached that coveted state of relaxation. Miraculously, Michele roused me from my slumber at the ungodly hour of 09:15, a feat not typically associated with my morning routine.
After dragging ourselves from the depths of our comfortable beds, we sauntered down for breakfast amidst the morning rush. Surprisingly, securing a table was a breeze despite the bustling atmosphere. A couple of invigorating cups of coffee later, I found myself fully revived and eagerly anticipating the day’s escapades.
A Day of Leisure
However, as fate would have it…
There isn’t much to regale you with today, dear reader. We opted for a leisurely spot on the far side of the pool, basking in the sun’s warm embrace. Following a few hours of leisurely reading, we meandered down to the beach. It was there that I plunged into the crystalline waters of the Aegean Sea for the first time. Refreshing, albeit a tad brisk initially, but one swiftly adjusts. Alas, the only drawback of this idyllic beach is its pebbly terrain. Methinks it’s high time we invest in some beach shoes. We lounged in the sun by the pool to dry off before embarking on our lunchtime escapade.
Rumours Afloat
During lunch, we found ourselves in close proximity to a couple from Edinburgh. Curiously, they broached the subject of Thomas Cook’s precarious financial predicament. Word on the grapevine suggests they might face bankruptcy by Sunday, potentially triggering the most extensive repatriation effort since the Second World War. An estimated 150,000 souls currently find themselves abroad under their wing. My son, Drew, is scheduled to jet off to Mexico with them tomorrow. I hastily dispatched a message to him, and despite the looming uncertainty, he remains resolute in his plans. Time will tell, I suppose.
An Afternoon of Serenity
The afternoon unfolded much like the morning – leisurely moments spent engrossed in my book by the pool, a brief excursion to the beach for a refreshing dip, and finally, indulging in some literature once more at the bar terrace overlooking the serene expanse of the sea, pint in hand.
Totally, utterly relaxed.
The Charming Staff and Eclectic Guests
It’s worth a mention, the delightful staff at our hotel. Always amiable and willing to lend a hand when needed. Curiously, the clientele here seem to hail from various corners of the globe, with a notable absence of fellow Brits. The predominant nationalities appear to be German, French, and Russian, lending an eclectic flair to our holiday haven.
