North Carolina 2022 – Day five

Sleepless Nights, Frosty Mornings and a Free Parking Victory

Day five dawned on very little sleep and quite a lot of eye-rolling. It was one of those nights. Not because of jet lag, bad dreams, or questionable American pillow technology, but thanks to Luna – the tiniest member of the household with the loudest opinions. Luna, still very much adjusting to life, had decided that being alone in her puppy cage was simply unacceptable. Michele, being soft-hearted and possessed of ears far more sensitive than mine, couldn’t settle at all. Naturally, this meant I couldn’t settle either. Such are the unspoken vows of marriage: your sleepless night shall also be my sleepless night.

Julie, too, seemed to have had a rough night, although she was far more gracious about it the next morning. Meanwhile, Elle and Hayley slept through the entire canine opera like champions, completely unbothered by the nocturnal protests. Youth really is wasted on the young.

A Brighter Morning (With a Hint of Frost)

Despite the lack of sleep, the morning brought with it a far more cheerful outlook. The weather had finally decided to play nicely. It was brighter, drier, and altogether more inviting than the soggy efforts of the previous day. There had been a slight frost overnight, which added a crisp sparkle to everything outside and reminded us that spring, though trying to behave itself, was still very much around.

As soon as the sun made an appearance, yesterday’s thoroughly soaked trainers were ceremoniously placed at the front of the house. This was less a careful drying strategy and more an act of desperation. Wet trainers on holiday are a menace, and nobody wants to start a day’s exploring with squelchy feet. Thankfully, the sunshine looked promising, and we crossed our fingers that evaporation would work its magic.

Heading Into Greensboro

After breakfast, we piled into the car and set off to explore Greensboro. Spirits were high, caffeine levels were acceptable, and the promise of a proper wander around a new city always brings a little spark of excitement.

Upon arriving, our first challenge was parking. Garage parking, on-street parking – frankly, we weren’t fussy. Any flat surface that would legally allow us to abandon the car for a few hours would have done nicely. We eventually found some on-street parking and approached the payment machine with optimism… which was swiftly crushed.

The machine refused cards. It refused cash. It refused to acknowledge our existence entirely. Just as mild panic began to set in, we spotted a parking enforcement officer up the road. Bracing ourselves for either a ticket or a lecture, we asked for guidance. Instead, we were rewarded with the glorious news that the parking was free because the meters were broken.

Winner winner chicken dinner indeed. Sometimes, the travel gods smile upon you.

Sunlit Streets and Chilly Breezes

Walking through Greensboro was genuinely lovely in the sunshine. The light bounced off the buildings, and the city felt relaxed and welcoming. That said, the chilly wind had other ideas. Every time it picked up, it cut straight through us, forcing fleeces back on and reminding us that appearances can be deceptive. Sun does not always equal warmth.

Before lunchtime, the city felt a little quiet. Many of the shops were shut, and there weren’t a huge number of people about, which gave the place an almost sleepy charm. It felt like we were wandering through Greensboro as it was slowly waking up rather than charging headfirst into the hustle and bustle.

Coffee, Cheesecake and Immediate Happiness

Thankfully, one place was very much open and calling our names: Cheesecakes by Alex. This discovery felt less like luck and more like destiny. There are few things more comforting on a chilly morning than a good coffee and a slice of something indulgent.

Michele opted for white chocolate, which suited her mood perfectly, while I went for key lime – sharp, refreshing, and absolutely spot on. The coffee shop itself was warm and inviting, and it provided exactly the sort of pitstop we needed. A chance to sit, chat, warm our hands and quietly judge the fact that it was still considered morning even though we felt like we’d already lived a full day.

Architecture With a Story to Tell

Back out on the streets, Greensboro continued to surprise us. The architecture is varied and interesting, with a mix of styles that reflect different eras of the city’s history. There’s something satisfying about a place that doesn’t try too hard to be one thing or another.

One particularly significant stop was the former FW Woolworth store on South Elm Street. This building is famous for the 1960s sit-in by students protesting segregation – a moment that played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement. Standing there, it was impossible not to feel a sense of respect and reflection. Travel has a wonderful way of quietly educating you when you least expect it.

Public Art and Protective Hearts

Further along, we came across The Five Hearths outside the Greensboro Municipal Office Buildings. These sculptural bollards are designed as protective elements and are intended to soften the harshness of the surrounding brutalist architecture. They’re unusual, thoughtful, and surprisingly charming – not words you often associate with bollards.

Greensboro clearly takes pride in its public art, and it shows. Scattered throughout the city are street sculptures celebrating its connection to the manufacture of jeans. One of the most eye-catching was the Melting Pot Mosaic, a colourful pair of jeans that felt joyful and symbolic all at once. It’s these little details that make wandering around a city so rewarding.

Retail Therapy (Within Reason)

Although the sun was doing its very best to warm things up, the wind never quite let us forget how cold it was. Eventually, we decided it was time to seek shelter – and what better shelter than a shopping centre?

Retail therapy was firmly on the agenda, particularly for Michele. Off we went to Macy’s, located on the retail park at Friendly Center Road. Michele was absolutely in her element, browsing racks and rails with the sort of enthusiasm usually reserved for people who haven’t had to consider suitcase space.

Alas, reality soon set in. There’s only so much you can buy when your luggage allowance is already being tested. Still, window shopping counts, and there’s something therapeutic about wandering around a big American department store, even if you leave with little more than ideas and self-restraint.

Back Home for Football (And Disappointment)

We managed to get back to Julie’s house just in time for me to catch the last 25 minutes of Liverpool v Manchester United (#Ad). In hindsight, I’m not entirely sure why I bothered. United were well and truly beaten, losing 4–0 in a performance best described as “character building” – if you’re an optimist.

It was painful viewing, and the result only reinforced the fact that United have a monumental task ahead of them if they’re going to turn things around. Sometimes, travel really is an escape from reality – except when football follows you across the Atlantic.

Reflections on Day Five

Despite the sleepless night and the football disappointment, day five had been thoroughly enjoyable. From free parking victories and meaningful historical landmarks to cheesecake stops and colourful street art, Greensboro had shown itself to be full of charm and character.

Not every day needs to be packed with big-ticket attractions. Sometimes, it’s the gentle wandering, unexpected discoveries and shared moments that make a trip truly memorable – even if you’re slightly sleep deprived while doing it.
