California and Hawaii – Day Eight
A Royal Wake-Up Call
Well, well, well, what a way to kick-start a morning! The sun hadn’t even fully stretched its rays across the horizon when we were greeted with the news that the ever-elegant HM Queen Elizabeth II was under the watchful eye of the medical guardians, with senior Royals hastily summoned to the esteemed Balmoral Castle. As the day unfolded, the sombre notes continued to play as the car radio solemnly relayed the passing of Her Majesty. A moment of silence, if you please, for a lady who shall not only be fondly remembered by her loyal subjects across the United Kingdom and Great Britain but indeed by souls across the globe. RIP Ma’am, your reign was regally remarkable.
Farewell to Terri and Rick
Bid adieu we did, to the delightful abode of Terri and Rick, at the respectable hour of 10:15. Oh, what splendid hosts they proved to be! Two nights under their roof felt like a whirlwind romance, with laughter and camaraderie dancing around like old chums reunited. It’s safe to say, we hit it off like a match made in host-heaven.
On the Road Again
With our hearts heavy with news from across the pond, we embarked on the next leg of our journey—a scenic 150+ mile jaunt from Visalia to Monterey via the charmingly named King City. Now, one could have opted for the swifter, albeit drearier, freeway route. But where’s the fun in that? We, my dear comrades, chose the road less travelled, with its twists and turns promising adventure at every corner. But first, a pit stop at Costco to replenish our fuel reserves, at the modest price of $4.399 per gallon (approximately £1.16 per litre).
Breakfast Bonanza
In the search for sustenance, the illustrious Terri had kindly recommended the Harris Ranch Inn and Restaurant at Coalinga, CA. And what a gem it turned out to be! Michele indulged in a classic combo of scrambled eggs and a bagel, whilst I opted for the hearty embrace of corned beef hash, accompanied by Eggs and a slice of sourdough bread toast. Oh, the joys of a well-fed morning!
Coastal Charms
As the wheels spun and the miles melted away, we found ourselves amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Californian coast in Monterey. Our abode for the night? The Wave Street Inn, a mere stone’s throw from the shimmering waterfront—two blocks, to be precise. The bay greeted us with the raucous calls of seagulls and the sleek silhouettes of black cormorants. But the real stars of the show? Ah, the sea lions and their otterly adorable companions! Alas, no otters graced us with their presence, but the sea lions put on a jolly good show, nonetheless.
A Feast Fit for Seafarers
With hunger gnawing at our bellies like eager seafarers awaiting their bounty, we sought refuge in the welcoming embrace of a local eatery. Calamari and Clam Chowder graced our table as starters, followed by a hearty pizza to share for mains. The chowder, thick as the morning fog, proved to be a delightful surprise, sending our taste buds on a merry dance. Libations flowed freely, with cocktails and American IPAs washing down our feast with gusto. And just when we thought the night couldn’t get any merrier, a detour to the Salty Seal sports bar ensued, for yet more cocktails and beer—because why limit oneself to just one watering hole?
A Night’s Repose
And so, dear reader, we find ourselves back at the cosy confines of our hotel, the day’s adventures tucked snugly under our belts. With the gentle lullaby of the ocean waves serenading us to sleep, we bid adieu to Day Eight, ready to embrace whatever Day Nine may bring.
