When in Mexico: Tequila, Tazmin, and Tasty Nachos

Mexico Day Nine – A Day of Tequila and Surprises

Ah, Mexico! Day nine greeted us with a much-needed rest after the previous day’s adventures had left us utterly knackered. I’m talking about a solid 9 hours of sleep, and yes, that’s nine blissful hours of uninterrupted slumber. Clearly, our bodies were crying out for a bit of recovery time.

A Modest Start to the Day

Breakfast was unusually restrained this morning, with just bran flakes on the menu. I know, shocking, right? No eggs, bacon, omelettes, or pancakes for us today—unlike the rest of the holidaymakers who seemed intent on indulging in the full breakfast spread. But a light breakfast felt like the right call after yesterday’s excesses.

After our humble meal, we made our way back to our favourite sun-soaked spot. With my book in hand, I settled in for an hour of peaceful reading before we embarked on our planned walk. But, as it often happens in Mexico, the best-laid plans tend to take unexpected turns. Before the walk could commence, I found myself roped into a tequila tasting session. Michele wasn’t particularly keen on the idea, so I bravely ventured off on my own to the members’ presentation. What can I say? When in Mexico…

Tequila Tasting: A Spirited Adventure

Now, Mexican tequila is a whole different beast compared to what we have back in the UK. Gone are the lime wedges and salt shakers; here, it’s all about sipping it neat over ice, and I must say, it’s a much more civilised affair. The session had about 20 of us gathered in a semi-circle, ready to embrace the spirit of Mexico—quite literally.

To my left sat another Russian-born participant who now resides in the US, but this time it was a lady. Alongside her was a Chinese-born American woman. And to my right? Well, let me tell you, I hit the jackpot. A vision of beauty straight out of my dreams—Tazmin, a six-foot-plus blonde who could easily pass for Maria Sharapova’s doppelgänger. Stick thin and from Southampton, she was a stunner. I know what you’re thinking, but unfortunately, there’s no photographic evidence, so you’ll just have to trust me on this one!

Over the course of the next hour, we were treated to a tasting of 11 different flavours of tequila. Yes, you read that right—eleven! We sampled everything from orange and cranberry to mango, tamarind, coffee, and even chocolate-flavoured tequila. But it wasn’t just about the booze; the experience was made all the more entertaining with the host’s over-the-top theatrics. There were plenty of Spanish phrases being tossed around and some rather amusing swaying of the hips.

To keep us from getting too tipsy, freshly made nachos and salsa were provided to help soak up the tequila. The salsa was a hit, and I found myself munching away between sips.

The Tequila Trio

Now, despite the festivities, my little group of four quickly found ourselves in hot water with the host. It turns out we were chatting far too much about the different flavours we were sampling, much to the dismay of our rather animated presenter. But who could blame us? We were having a grand time comparing notes and savouring the tamarind tequila, which quickly became our unanimous favourite.

By the time the session wrapped up, all eleven bottles were empty, and not a crumb of salsa was left on the table. It was quite the experience, and I walked away with a newfound appreciation for the finer points of tequila tasting.

Tazmin, as it turned out, was on holiday at the hotel for a week before joining the staff as an employee. A brave move, but I’ve no doubt she’ll do brilliantly. After all, she seemed to have the perfect blend of charm and confidence needed to thrive in such a role.

An Evening with My True Love

After my tequila-filled afternoon, it was time to rejoin the real lady of my dreams, Michele. Together, we headed off for our evening meal at the hotel’s Mexican restaurant. The food was decent enough, though I must say it didn’t quite match up to the delightful Thai cuisine we had enjoyed earlier in the week. But hey, you can’t win them all.

As we savoured our meal and reflected on the day’s events, I couldn’t help but smile at the unexpected turn my day had taken. From a modest breakfast to a whirlwind tequila tasting, it had been a day full of surprises and memorable moments.

A Day to Remember

So, there you have it—Mexico day nine in all its glory. A day that started with a simple bowl of bran flakes and ended with a belly full of tequila and nachos. It was one of those days that reminds you why travel is so magical—because you never quite know what’s around the corner.
