California and Hawaii – Day Thirteen
Croissants, Coffee, and Commotion
Up with the roosters, we embraced the day after a sophisticated start with croissants, coffee, and the audacious decision to craft ham and cheese masterpieces for later. Truly, we’re the pioneers of breakfast brilliance.
Cruisin’ to Kilauea
In our trusty chariot, we embarked on a quest to the northern realms of Kauai. Our first detour was the illustrious Kilauea Lighthouse. Denied entry to the lighthouse itself, we stood witness to the grandeur below—a bay and cove combo, a hidden coastal sanctuary accessible only by boat. Rumor had it, whales, turtles, dolphins, and seals might grace us with their presence, but alas, not today.
A Coffee Oasis in a Village
Amidst the twists and turns, we found solace in a quaint village, where caffeine dreams came true. A macaroon danced with joy into my hands, while Michele indulged in a lemony love affair with a pastry. Life’s simple pleasures served with a side of charm.
Haena Hiccups
Continuing north, we navigated hairpin bends and tiptoed across single-track bridges. Haena Beach Park beckoned, but alas, parking paranoia set in—$200 fines loomed. A beach rendezvous turned U-turn adventure, with Michele convinced I attract parking fines like a magnet. Beach dreams deferred, but not abandoned.
Beach Bum Bliss
Against all odds, we found a parking oasis on our return journey. A secluded beach became our haven; sandwiches met their destiny, and I waded into the Pacific, where the waves whispered tales of serenity. A wooden shack on this golden shore—now there’s a tempting notion.
Costco Quest and Ocean Soiree
Water shoes were the goal at Costco, but destiny had other plans. A beachwear metamorphosis later, we embraced the ocean’s lukewarm embrace. Surf’s up, the beach is ours, and cautionary tales of hard coral underfoot added a dash of adventure. Apparently, the pool was the cool kid’s hangout.
Thai Triumph in Lihue
As the sun dipped low, the call of culinary exploration led us to Lihue’s Rice Street. A hidden gem revealed itself—Anattas Thai Street Food, a mobile marvel. Pad Thai revelations and barbeque chicken skewers orchestrated a symphony of flavors, all for the grand sum of $40. Kauai’s culinary zenith achieved.
Moonlit Musings by the Waves
Returning to our abode, I find myself, Gary, the bard of the balcony, spinning tales by the moonlit waves. A call from my industrious daughter, Sam, adds a sprinkle of familial warmth to this paradise-drenched night.
