Trig Points and Treetops: Navigating Grizedale’s Winter Wonderland

Grizedale Gala: A December Delight

A Walk on the Whimsical Side

Ah, December – the month when waistbands stretch, and resolutions hide behind mountains of mince pies. It’s also the time when my mate Warren, fueled by a sudden burst of post-Christmas enthusiasm, decided to whisk me away on a walking escapade in the Lake District. And so, the adventure began, but not before a pitstop at Warren’s caravan near Flookburgh. Because nothing says “Let’s conquer the great outdoors” like locking down a caravan for the closed season.

Caravans and Cockapoos

Bright and early at 07:30, with Alfie, Warren’s spirited cockapoo, in tow, we embarked on a 90-minute drive up the M61 to the mysterious sanctuary of his caravan. After ensuring the freezer was emptier than our post-Christmas bank accounts, and the water was drained faster than our holiday spirits, we secured the caravan tighter than Santa’s naughty list. And then, with the precision of seasoned adventurers, we set our course for the Grizedale Forest.

Trig Points and Top Views

Our destination? The Grizedale Visitor Centre, a place that promised not only maps and information but also the chance to breathe in the crisp forest air. The plan? Reach the trig point at Carron Crag, where, with luck, we’d have panoramic views worthy of postcards. Climbing steadily, we reached the trig point (314m) in conditions crisper than a frostbitten snowman. Above the tree line, we were treated to a snow-capped spectacle – The Old Man of Coniston and Helvellyn, standing proudly in the distance.

A Forest Descent and a Coffee Ascent

Descending through the forest towards Coniston Water, our excitement matched the altitude. Yet, as the day ticked away like seconds on a Christmas countdown, we made the tough decision to cut short our descent. With a proverbial U-turn, we retraced our steps, making our way back to the visitor centre via the base of Carron Crag. The only thing left to do? Warm up with a coffee at the Cafe in the Forest, where tales of our daring exploits echoed among the trees.

The Verdict – Where Adventures Brew

And so, the Grizedale Gala came to an end. A day filled with forest frolics, caravan closures, and cockapoo companionship. The views? Picture-perfect. The company? Top-notch. The coffee? A warm hug for the soul. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of December, we couldn’t help but marvel at the magic of a Lake District adventure.
