Raining in Mexico

Beachside Capers: Mojitos, Rain, and the Great Turtle Hunt

Turtle Quest Chronicles: A Cheeky Beach Adventure in Mexico – Day Ten

Late Risers and Lizard Escapades

Ah, another day in the tropical paradise of Mexico, and the struggle to rise with the sun continues – well, not really. Our ambitious breakfast venture commenced fashionably late at 09:00. The impending doom of returning to the real world in a week looms, but for now, we’ll manage just fine with our leisurely mornings.

Last night’s room escapade involved a tiny lizard or gecko—hard to say in the dark. Fear not, for I played the hero, catching and releasing it into the wild. Today, a smaller version graced us with its presence, and once again, I embarked on a superhero mission, ensuring its freedom on the sunny balcony.

Beach Bumming and Scorching Sun

Today’s grand plan? Settling on the beach, yet again. The thermometer laughed at us, displaying a scorching 29 degrees. I devoted my initial beach hour to reading, while Michele serenaded the seagulls with her eclectic taste in music. A swift call to my daughter and her entourage at home followed, a reminder of responsibilities soon to be revived.

Turtle Hunt Round Two

In our perpetual pursuit of the elusive turtles, luck continued to evade us. Fish and a friendly stingray compensated for the turtle no-show. The usual suspects, silver fish and their smaller yellow and black counterparts, made an appearance. Lunch at the beach BBQ was a pitstop before returning to the shoreline for more turtle stalking.

Iguanas, Lizards, and Evidence of Life

Venturing in the opposite direction this time, I encountered an Iguana parade, accompanied by a supporting cast of lizards and geckos. The jackpot, however, was the beach adorned with turtle nests. Each guarded like royalty, marked and enclosed with protective nets. Evidence of hatched turtle eggs—resembling table tennis balls—presented itself. Alas, no actual turtles, leaving me wondering if they were just a beachside myth.

Mojitos, Singapore Slings, and Unexpected Reunions

Back on the beach, Michele and I treated ourselves to mojitos and even a Singapore sling. The weather, true to its unpredictable form, surprised us with rain—not the usual 90-second tease, but a generous 20-minute shower. Seeking refuge in our room via the bar, the rain, of course, stopped right as we reached shelter. Mother Nature has a sense of humor.

Serendipity Strikes: A Timperley Connection

The world, as it turns out, is incredibly small. Engaging in a chat with a fellow beach dweller, I discovered he hailed from Canada. Upon mentioning my roots in the UK, specifically Manchester, he dropped the bombshell question—did I know Altrincham? Well, surprise! I’m a Timperley lad by birth, and it turns out he spent his youth in Altrincham before venturing across the pond to Canada. Cue the “small world” anthem.

Steak, Surf, Turf, and the Question of Turtle Existence

As night falls, we find ourselves at the steak restaurant. Attempting to conquer the surf and turf, I faced a colossal challenge—a massive salmon slice, three oversized shrimp, and a piece of tenderloin. Was it the feast that left me satiated, or perhaps the three crab claws I devoured as a starter? The answer remains unclear, but the lingering question persists—will I ever lay eyes on a real-life turtle?
