New York – the final day

Yesterday was known as ‘New York – The final Day’

We were up and out before 09:00 shopping AGAIN, but not sure there are too many bargains to be had in this city. Not like in Chicago but then again in Chicago we were living like locals rather than tourists.

No Jelly Belly Beans found in Macy’s so that hunt was knocked on the head! But Michele had other ideas for shopping and we were off in search for the Levi’s store. This time we were lucky and in the sizes we wanted too!

Now i could have my breakfast of cream cheese bagel with coffee in a small local deli tucked away down by the side of Macy’s.

Then back to the hotel to pack the bag & check out. Bag dropped off with the concierge & we were off again this time looking for the bus tour guys. The route agreed and we were on the ‘downtown’ route heading towards the Brooklyn Bridge. As we waved our way through the street and avenues listening to our tour guide pumping our ears with his knowledge on everything New York.

Things i learn’t are 5th Avenue is 6.5 miles long, to buy an apartment in Manhattan you’ll need anything from $2.5 million upwards!!

After 2 hours on the ‘downtown’ bus we changed at Central Park to get on the ‘Uptown’ route and took in the sights of Central Park, Grants tomb & Museum Mile. By the time we were starting to feel the cold Easterly wind coming in off the Hudson River, Michele’s cue to disappear inside the bus rather than sitting up on the top deck freezing. I managed to hold out until we passed through Harlem then i too gave in and went downstairs to keep warm,

When we got off the bus at Times Square we had just over an hour to find somewhere to eat before we needed to be on the road back to JFK Airport.  Michele decided that we’d eat at Bubba Gumps Restaurant based on the Film Forest Gump. Wow good choice.

Now for the taxi ride back to JFK, we had an interesting Jamaican driver that worked his taxi in NYC for 6 months per year before heading home to Florida for the summer. He kept us entertained for the 75 minute drive. He was a far better driver than the one that took us into the city.

Airport security was tight at JFK which is no issue as they are keeping us safe. Once through security Michele was off shopping again, while i went and had a beer. The beer was a great tasting IPA, but should have been for $12.70 (£8.34). Michele returned with her collection of Jelly Belly Beans & joined me for a beer.

The flight was a busy flight on the way home but still the great service by the Delta team. The only downside was that we had a young child about 5 years old whinging away when we should have all been going to sleep!

Sam & Harry met us at the airport and it was great to feel wanted as Harry ran over shouting Pompa, He’s not managed Grandpa yet but i’m sure he will do in time.

I worked from home today but have struggled with a little bit of jet-lag.

New York & Adele

Well today was the reason why we’ve flown 3300 miles and that’s to see Adele at Radio City Hall. This is the reason why this post is called New York & Adele.

But before then we had a day of sightseeing & shopping. Guess who had organised the sightseeing & who had organised the shopping? Yes you’re right. Sightseeing = Gary & shopping = Michele. Is it now I use the hashtag (#) brokenman?

Neither of us had slept too soundly as New York is 5 hours behind the UK so we were wide awake by 05:00 (10:00 UK time).

Up and out then by 08:00 and heading west in a yellow cab towards the 911 memorial. A little earlier than we should have been as you’re given a time slot to visit the 911 museum, so it was of on search of some breakfast. Fresh bagels with cream cheese and coffee. Once in the 911 museum we had 2.5 hours of everything 911. We saw salvaged steel columns, crushed fire engines, the only non broken pane of glass window & video footage and memories of the people that perished. The external areas were simple in design but effective and helped to sum up the scale of the area damaged.

I pursued Michele to take a rice on the NYC underground where we got off at Times Square which I think was the setting place as we were heading over to Bloomingdales in search of a purse for one of the lads wives from work. Purse found but at the cost of $174 for a purse are you kidding?! Michele declared Bloomingdales was more expensive than Macy’s and now wanted to go there, SFU of we went in a taxi. More handbags and purses bought at silly prices before I ushered Michele out and back to the hotel to drop the shopping off.

Now the main event Adele.

More walking as the taxis were either full or knocking off for the night.

Got to Radio City Hall one hour early, checked where we were picking the tickets up from and wandered off on search of a beer. $37 (£20) dollars for two drinks 🙁

Drinks finished now to collect the tickets. Nooooooo the queue was now 1 hour 20 minutes long! Guess who got the blame – yup Gary! We meet some nice people in the queue and had a giggle. Finally picked the tickets up and we were in. Michele spotted David Schwimmer and another famous lady and she seemed happy. Just down the row from our seats in mezzanine level 3 were 2 measures who had also won tickets and had flown in from Birmingham.

Adele performed for about an hour and 15 minutes, she charted with the audience, swore at certain points and sing beautifully. Adele – all I can say is fantastic and we’ll worth the trip. Michele was in her element singing away. Don’t worry Adele your job is safe.

No back at the hotel and Michele is asleep, best nod off myself night.

Manchester to New York

Up at 05:00 to avoid the rush hour traffic, but I don’t think either one of us had slept very well. We made it to Sam’s to leave the car and we were even in time to wake Harry, who greeted me with a big smiley face. We only managed to drink a couple of mouthfuls of our coffee before the taxi arrived to take us to Manchester Airport. We said good bye and were on our way with a dash across the Atlantic in a trip from Manchester to New York.

Checked in OK with Delta and off for some breakfast, but not before Michele passed through the duty free area and the perfume stands. Purfume bought now for breakfast at Frankie & Benny’s. However on the way through security Michele’s hand bag was taken to one side for extra checks!!!

A short wait at the gate and we were boarding, well I was as Michele was stopped again for another security check!! Bag checked and shoes checked only thing that was missing was the rubber gloves! Come on Mrs C squat and cough!

The cabin crew made us feel welcome and announced it was a complimentary bar and guess what no driving for me when we land. Samuel Adams, Blue Moon & Heineken on offer. Michele had vodka and orange. The food with Delta was good too.

Then we were into JFK Airport, the queue through passport control was not too long, in-fact we queued longer for the ‘Yellow cab taxi’ at the taxi rank. $59 for the fixed fare into New York which was OK but the driver gave me travel sickness!!! Which was the first time in years.

We checked in to our hotel (Affinia, Manhattan) and then headed out to get our bearings. Times square, Rockerfella Centre and Bryant Park before heading back to the hotel to sleep.

Night all
