Chicago – Day Five

I think my grumpy neighbour has followed us to the US as this morning when I got to the car I’d got a $20 for parking outside of my cousins house!

It appears that there is some dark hidden bye law that doesn’t allow you to park in the cul-de-sac between 02:00 & 06:00, maybe one of Julie’s neighbours is as grumpy as ours is as it’s not a road the police would be expected to drive down!

Ah well off to Portage Lakefront for today’s activity – a day at the beach on Lake Michigan, but only for Mrs C, Joshua and myself went as Lewis wanted to just chill.

First stop though was the town of Gary, I’d been told by several people not to go as it was a deprived area but it didn’t look too bad. We didn’t stop the car though but just got some photos as we drive through.

The drive from Lisle to Portage is about 60 miles and about an hour down the freeway.

There was ample free parking at the visitor centre only 2 minutes walk from the beech

The beech was very clean and there was not too much over crowding. There was a mixture of families and couples on the beech. The view across the lake towards Chicago was hazy but you could just about make out the skyline of the city only 35 miles away

I had a swim in the lake, cool to start with but like all water you get used to it, the waves were fun as well but strange as there is no tide!

Joshua and I went exploring the dunes at the back of the beach as well as the water front where the were a number of private houses

The only downside to this place of tranquility is that it is surrounded by heavy industry belching out fumes to the atmosphere

After the drive back we caught up with Lewis before he headed out with Chris

Another great day ????
